Project: Local Charity Support

ICS Ltd wanted to help a local charity by offering our services to them.  After some research, we found the Umbrella Charity, a charity based in Derby supporting disabled children, young people and their families helping people realise their potential and helping to transform lives. Their website said they were calling 2016 the Year of the Garden. They are also celebrating their 30th year this year.

Following discussions with the charity, it became apparent that they had a lot of work to do in their garden to enhance learning and outdoor play for the children and young adults.  We, therefore, went along and had a look at the plans and offered our services by donating our time, equipment and experience to carry out the building and landscaping works.

Work commenced in April.

We had a substantial amount of ground preparation work to carry out.  The garden needed levelling to make it more user-friendly for wheelchair users and to allow artificial lawn and special rubber path to be laid.

Other work included removal of various trees and shrubbery, kerbing around the lawn and paths and installation of new fencing and gates.

Once the levelling had been completed, we started work on building some steps leading out onto the recently acquired land to the side of the garden which is to become a car park for staff and visitors and palladine fencing was purchased and installed with a secure gate into the garden.

A concrete area was laid to the back corner for a gazebo structure to be built.

Final touches have been made to the garden and the Umbrella Charity are extremely happy with their new outdoor area which the users are already enjoying.

Ann Rowlands, Chief Executive of the Charity said:

"I was absolutely delighted when ICS Limited contacted Umbrella to offer help with our garden project.  Our original garden was very uneven and needed a huge amount of work to make it safe, secure, flat and accessible for everyone."

"We now have a garden which can be used all year round, the children and young adults absolutely love the new outside space. We are delighted with the amount of support we have received from Paul and all of the ICS staff team.  It was an absolute pleasure to work with such professional staff, nothing was too much trouble.   Without the generous support of the ICS team, our children and young adults would not have the garden they so much deserve and we are extremely grateful."
